The Collect

The Holy Name
Eternal Father, who didst give to thine incarnate Son the holy name of Jesus to be the sign of our salvation: Plant in every heart, we beseech thee, the love of him who is the Savior of the world, even our Lord Jesus Christ; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen
Preface of the Incarnation

Old Testament Reading

Exodus 34:1-8
1And the LORD said to Moses, "Cut two tablets of stone like the first ones, and I will write on these tablets the words that were on the first tablets which you broke. 2So be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning to Mount Sinai, and present yourself to Me there on the top of the mountain. 3And no man shall come up with you, and let no man be seen throughout all the mountain; let neither flocks nor herds feed before that mountain." 4So he cut two tablets of stone like the first ones. Then Moses rose early in the morning and went up Mount Sinai, as the LORD had commanded him; and he took in his hand the two tablets of stone. 5Now the LORD descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD. 6And the LORD passed before him and proclaimed, "The LORD, the LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, 7keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children's children to the third and the fourth generation." 8So Moses made haste and bowed his head toward the earth, and worshiped. -- NKJV

Psalm

Psalm 8

Domine, Dominus noster
1O LORD our Governor, * how exalted is your Name in all the world!
2Out of the mouths of infants and children * your majesty is praised above the heavens.
3You have set up a stronghold against your adversaries, * to quell the enemy and the avenger.
4When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, * the moon and the stars you have set in their courses,
5What is man that you should be mindful of him? * the son of man that you should seek him out?
6You have made him but little lower than the angels; * you adorn him with glory and honour;
7You give him mastery over the works of your hands; * you put all things under his feet:
8All sheep and oxen, * even the wild beasts of the field,
9The birds of the air, the fish of the sea, * and whatsoever walks in the paths of the sea.
10O LORD our Governor, * how exalted is your Name in all the world!

New Testament Reading

Romans 1:1-7
1Paul, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated to the gospel of God 2which He promised before through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures, 3concerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh, 4and declared to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead. 5Through Him we have received grace and apostleship for obedience to the faith among all nations for His name, 6among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ; 7To all who are in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. -- NKJV

Gospel Reading

Luke 2:15-21
15So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, "Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us." 16And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger. 17Now when they had seen Him, they made widely known the saying which was told them concerning this Child. 18And all those who heard it marveled at those things which were told them by the shepherds. 19But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told them. 21And when eight days were completed for the circumcision of the Child, His name was called JESUS, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb. -- NKJV

To be used on Sundays and weekdays alike, except as otherwise appointed for Holy Days and Various Occasions
Because thou didst give Jesus Christ, thine only Son, to be born for us; who, by the mighty power of the Holy Ghost, was made very Man of the substance of the Virgin Mary his mother; that we might be delivered from the bondage of sin, and receive power to become thy children.
