Daily Morning Prayer: Rite Two

Officiant begins with the following:

I will give you as a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.
Isaiah 49:6b

Confession of Sin

Dearly beloved, we have come together in the presence of Almighty God our heavenly Father, to set forth his praise, to hear his holy Word, and to ask, for ourselves and on behalf of others, those things that are necessary for our life and our salvation. And so that we may prepare ourselves in heart and mind to worship him, let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, that we may obtain forgiveness by his infinite goodness and mercy.

or this

Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God.

Silence may be kept.
Officiant and People together, all kneeling

Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us;
that we may delight in your will,
and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your name. Amen.

The Priest alone stands and says*

Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

*A deacon or lay person using the preceding form remains kneeling, and substitutes "us" for "you" and "our" for "your."

Then follows

The Psalm or Psalms Appointed:

Psalm 148
1Praise the LORD!
Praise the LORD from the heavens;
Praise Him in the heights!

2Praise Him, all His angels;
Praise Him, all His hosts!

3Praise Him, sun and moon;
Praise Him, all you stars of light!

4Praise Him, you heavens of heavens,
And you waters above the heavens!

5Let them praise the name of the LORD,
For He commanded and they were created.

6He also established them forever and ever;
He made a decree which shall not pass away.

7Praise the LORD from the earth,
You great sea creatures and all the depths;

8Fire and hail, snow and clouds;
Stormy wind, fulfilling His word;

9Mountains and all hills;
Fruitful trees and all cedars;

10Beasts and all cattle;
Creeping things and flying fowl;

11Kings of the earth and all peoples;
Princes and all judges of the earth;

12Both young men and maidens;
Old men and children.

13Let them praise the name of the LORD,
For His name alone is exalted;
His glory is above the earth and heaven.

14And He has exalted the horn of His people,
The praise of all His saints-
Of the children of Israel,
A people near to Him.
Praise the LORD!
-- NKJV

Psalm 149
1Praise the LORD!
Sing to the LORD a new song,
And His praise in the assembly of saints.

2Let Israel rejoice in their Maker;
Let the children of Zion be joyful in their King.

3Let them praise His name with the dance;
Let them sing praises to Him with the timbrel and harp.

4For the LORD takes pleasure in His people;
He will beautify the humble with salvation.

5Let the saints be joyful in glory;
Let them sing aloud on their beds.

6Let the high praises of God be in their mouth,
And a two-edged sword in their hand,

7To execute vengeance on the nations,
And punishments on the peoples;

8To bind their kings with chains,
And their nobles with fetters of iron;

9To execute on them the written judgment-
This honor have all His saints.
Praise the LORD!
-- NKJV

Psalm 150
1Praise the LORD!
Praise God in His sanctuary;
Praise Him in His mighty firmament!

2Praise Him for His mighty acts;
Praise Him according to His excellent greatness!

3Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet;
Praise Him with the lute and harp!

4Praise Him with the timbrel and dance;
Praise Him with stringed instruments and flutes!

5Praise Him with loud cymbals;
Praise Him with clashing cymbals!

6Let everything that has breath praise the LORD.
Praise the LORD!
-- NKJV

Psalm 114
1When Israel went out of Egypt,
The house of Jacob from a people of strange language,

2Judah became His sanctuary,
And Israel His dominion.

3The sea saw it and fled;
Jordan turned back.

4The mountains skipped like rams,
The little hills like lambs.

5What ails you, O sea, that you fled?
O Jordan, that you turned back?

6O mountains, that you skipped like rams?
O little hills, like lambs?

7Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord,
At the presence of the God of Jacob,

8Who turned the rock into a pool of water,
The flint into a fountain of waters.
-- NKJV

Psalm 115
1Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us,
But to Your name give glory,
Because of Your mercy,
Because of Your truth.

2Why should the Gentiles say,
"So where is their God?"

3But our God is in heaven;
He does whatever He pleases.

4Their idols are silver and gold,
The work of men's hands.

5They have mouths, but they do not speak;
Eyes they have, but they do not see;

6They have ears, but they do not hear;
Noses they have, but they do not smell;

7They have hands, but they do not handle;
Feet they have, but they do not walk;
Nor do they mutter through their throat.

8Those who make them are like them;
So is everyone who trusts in them.

9O Israel, trust in the LORD;
He is their help and their shield.

10O house of Aaron, trust in the LORD;
He is their help and their shield.

11You who fear the LORD, trust in the LORD;
He is their help and their shield.

12The LORD has been mindful of us;
He will bless us;
He will bless the house of Israel;
He will bless the house of Aaron.

13He will bless those who fear the LORD,
Both small and great.

14May the LORD give you increase more and more,
You and your children.

15May you be blessed by the LORD,
Who made heaven and earth.

16The heaven, even the heavens, are the LORD's;
But the earth He has given to the children of men.

17The dead do not praise the LORD,
Nor any who go down into silence.

18But we will bless the LORD
From this time forth and forevermore.
Praise the LORD!
-- NKJV

At the end of the Psalm is sung or said

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:*
  as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen
-or-
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:*
  as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The Lessons

The Old Testament Reading

Reader: A Reading (Lesson) from Genesis 7:1-10,17-23

Genesis 7:1-10,17-23
1Then the LORD said to Noah, "Come into the ark, you and all your household, because I have seen that you are righteous before Me in this generation. 2You shall take with you seven each of every clean animal, a male and his female; two each of animals that are unclean, a male and his female; 3also seven each of birds of the air, male and female, to keep the species alive on the face of all the earth. 4For after seven more days I will cause it to rain on the earth forty days and forty nights, and I will destroy from the face of the earth all living things that I have made." 5And Noah did according to all that the LORD commanded him. 6Noah was six hundred years old when the floodwaters were on the earth. 7So Noah, with his sons, his wife, and his sons' wives, went into the ark because of the waters of the flood. 8Of clean animals, of animals that are unclean, of birds, and of everything that creeps on the earth, 9two by two they went into the ark to Noah, male and female, as God had commanded Noah. 10And it came to pass after seven days that the waters of the flood were on the earth. 17Now the flood was on the earth forty days. The waters increased and lifted up the ark, and it rose high above the earth. 18The waters prevailed and greatly increased on the earth, and the ark moved about on the surface of the waters. 19And the waters prevailed exceedingly on the earth, and all the high hills under the whole heaven were covered. 20The waters prevailed fifteen cubits upward, and the mountains were covered. 21And all flesh died that moved on the earth: birds and cattle and beasts and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, and every man. 22All in whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit of life, all that was on the dry land, died. 23So He destroyed all living things which were on the face of the ground: both man and cattle, creeping thing and bird of the air. They were destroyed from the earth. Only Noah and those who were with him in the ark remained alive. -- NKJV

16 The Song of Zechariah Benedictus Dominus Deus
Luke 1: 68-79

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; *
 he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior, *
 born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old,
that he would save us from our enemies, *
 from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers *
 and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham, *
 to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

Free to worship him without fear, *
 holy and righteous in his sight
 all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, *
 for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,
To give his people knowledge of salvation *
 by the forgiveness of their sins.
In the tender compassion of our God *
 the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, *
	and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *
 as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 	world without end.  Amen.

The New Testament Reading

Reader: A Reading (Lesson) from Ephesians 4:1-16

Ephesians 4:1-16
1I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, 2with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, 3endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; 5one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. 7But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ's gift. 8Therefore He says: " When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, And gave gifts to men." 9(Now this, "He ascended"-what does it mean but that He also first descended into the lower parts of the earth? 10He who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.) 11And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, 13till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; 14that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, 15but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head-Christ- 16from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love. -- NKJV

Answer: Thanks be to God.

21 You are God Te Deum laudamus

You are God:  we praise you;
You are the Lord; we acclaim you;
You are the eternal Father:
All creation worships you.
To you all angels, all the powers of heaven,
Cherubim and Seraphim, sing in endless praise:
 Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
 heaven and earth are full of your glory.

The glorious company of apostles praise you.
The noble fellowship of prophets praise you.
The white-robed army of martyrs praise you.
Throughout the world the holy Church acclaims you;
 Father, of majesty unbounded,
 your true and only Son, worthy of all worship,
 and the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide.

You, Christ, are the king of glory,
the eternal Son of the Father.
When you became man to set us free
you did not shun the Virgin's womb.
You overcame the sting of death
and opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers.
You are seated at God's right hand in glory.
We believe that you will come and be our judge.
 Come then, Lord, and help your people,
 bought with the price of your own blood,
 and bring us with your saints
 to glory everlasting.

The Gospel

Reader: A reading from the Gospel according to St. Mark.

Mark 3:7-19
7But Jesus withdrew with His disciples to the sea. And a great multitude from Galilee followed Him, and from Judea 8and Jerusalem and Idumea and beyond the Jordan; and those from Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude, when they heard how many things He was doing, came to Him. 9So He told His disciples that a small boat should be kept ready for Him because of the multitude, lest they should crush Him. 10For He healed many, so that as many as had afflictions pressed about Him to touch Him. 11And the unclean spirits, whenever they saw Him, fell down before Him and cried out, saying, "You are the Son of God." 12But He sternly warned them that they should not make Him known. 13And He went up on the mountain and called to Him those He Himself wanted. And they came to Him. 14Then He appointed twelve, that they might be with Him and that He might send them out to preach, 15and to have power to heal sicknesses and to cast out demons: 16Simon, to whom He gave the name Peter; 17James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James, to whom He gave the name Boanerges, that is, "Sons of Thunder"; 18Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Cananite; 19and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him. And they went into a house. -- NKJV

The Apostles' Creed
Officiant and People together, all standing

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
 creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord.
 He was conceived by the Holy Spirit
	and born of the Virgin Mary.
 He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
 	was crucified, died, and was buried.
 He descended to the dead.
 On the third day he rose again.
 He ascended into heaven,

 He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
 the holy catholic Church,
 the communion of saints,
 the forgiveness of sins,
 the resurrection of the body,
 and the life everlasting.  Amen.

Second Sunday after the Epiphany
Almighty God, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ is the light of the world: Grant that your people, illumined by your Word and Sacraments, may shine with the radiance of Christ's glory, that he may be known, worshiped, and obeyed to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and for ever. Then, unless the Eucharist or a form of general intercession is to follow, the following prayer for mission is added.

Prayer for Mission
O God, you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth, and sent your blessed Son to preach peace to those who are far off and to those who are near: Grant that people everywhere may seek after you and find you; bring the nations into your fold; pour out your Spirit upon all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Authorized intercessions and thanksgivings may follow.

Before the close of the Office one or both of the following may be used

The General Thanksgiving
Officiant and People

Almighty God, Father of all mercies,
we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks
for all your goodness and loving-kindness
to us and to all whom you have made.
We bless you for our creation, preservation,
and all the blessings of this life;
but above all for your immeasurable love
in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ;
for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory.
And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies,
that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise,
not only with our lips, but in our lives,
by giving up our selves to your service,
and by walking before you
in holiness and righteousness all our days;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit,
be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen.

A Prayer of St. Chrysostom
Officiant

Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one
accord to make our common supplication to you; and you
have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two
or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the
midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions
as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of
your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen.

Then may be said
Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Officiant concludes with:

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen.
