Daily Morning Prayer: Rite One

Officiant begins with the following:

The Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising.
Isaiah 60:3

Confession of Sin

Dearly beloved, we have come together in the presence of Almighty God our heavenly Father, to render thanks for the great benefits that we have received at his hands, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear His holy Word, and to ask, for ourselves and on behalf of others, those things that are necessary for our life and our salvation. And so that we may prepare ourselves in heart and mind to worship him, let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, that we may obtain forgiveness by his infinite goodness and mercy.

or this

Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God.

Silence may be kept.
Officiant and People together, all kneeling

Almighty and most merciful Father,
we have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep,
we have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts,
we have offended against thy holy laws,
we have left undone those things which we ought to have done,
and we have done those things which we ought not to have done.
But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us,
spare thou those who confess their faults,
restore thou those who are penitent,
according to thy promises declared unto mankind
in Christ Jesus our Lord;
and grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake,
that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life,
to the glory of thy holy Name. Amen.

The Priest alone stands and says*

The Almighty and merciful Lord grant you absolution and remission of all your sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of his Holy Spirit. Amen.

*A deacon or lay person using the preceding form remains kneeling, and substitutes "us" for "you" and "our" for "your."

The Invitatory and Psalter

All stand

Officiant O Lord, open thou our lips.
People And our mouth shall show forth thy praise.

Officiant and People
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Alleluia

Then follows one of the Invitatory Psalms, Venite or Jubilate.
One of the following Antiphons may be sung or said with the Invitatory Psalm

During Epiphany
The Lord hath manifested forth his glory: O come, let us adore him.

On other Sundays and weekdays
Worship the Lord in the beauty of his holiness: O come, let us adore him.

The Alleluias in the following Antiphons are used only in Easter Season.

On Feasts of the Incarnation
[Alleluia.] The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us: O come, let us adore him. [Alleluia.]

On all Saints and other Major Saints' Days
[Alleluia.] The Lord is glorious in his saints: O come, let us adore him. [Alleluia.]

Venite
Psalm 95:1-7

O come, let us sing unto the Lord; *
 let us heartily rejoice in the strength of our salvation.
Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving *
 and show ourselves glad in him with psalms.

[Antiphon, if used]

For the Lord is a great God, *
 and a great King above all gods.
In his hand are the corners of the earth, *
 and the strength of the hills is his also.
The sea is his, and he made it, *
 and his hands prepared the dry land.

[Antiphon, if used]

O come, let us worship and fall down, *
 and kneel before the Lord our Maker.
For he is the Lord our God, *
 and we are the people of his pasture
 and the sheep of his hand.

[Antiphon, if used]

O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; *
 let the whole earth stand in awe of him.
For he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth
 and with righteousness to judge the world
 and the peoples with his truth.

Then follows

The Psalm or Psalms Appointed:

Psalm 102

Domine, exaudi
1LORD, hear my prayer, and let my cry come before you; * hide not your face from me in the day of my trouble.
2Incline your ear to me; * when I call, make haste to answer me,
3For my days drift away like smoke, * and my bones are hot as burning coals.
4My heart is smitten like grass and withered, * so that I forget to eat my bread.
5Because of the voice of my groaning * I am but skin and bones.
6I have become like a vulture in the wilderness, * like an owl among the ruins.
7I lie awake and groan; * I am like a sparrow, lonely on a house-top.
8My enemies revile me all day long, * and those who scoff at me have taken an oath against me.
9For I have eaten ashes for bread * and mingled my drink with weeping.
10Because of your indignation and wrath * you have lifted me up and thrown me away.
11My days pass away like a shadow, * and I wither like the grass.
12But you, O LORD, endure for ever, * and your Name from age to age.
13You will arise and have compassion on Zion, for it is time to have mercy upon her; * indeed, the appointed time has come.
14For your servants love her very rubble, * and are moved to pity even for her dust.
15The nations shall fear your Name, O LORD, * and all the kings of the earth your glory.
16For the LORD will build up Zion, * and his glory will appear.
17He will look with favor on the prayer of the homeless; * he will not despise their plea.
18Let this be written for a future generation, * so that a people yet unborn may praise the LORD.
19For the LORD looked down from his holy place on high; * from the heavens he beheld the earth;
20That he might hear the groan of the captive * and set free those condemned to die;
21That they may declare in Zion the Name of the LORD, * and his praise in Jerusalem;
22When the peoples are gathered together, * and the kingdoms also, to serve the LORD.
23He has brought down my strength before my time; * he has shortened the number of my days;
24And I said, "O my God, do not take me away in the midst of my days; * your years endure throughout all generations.
25In the beginning, O LORD, you laid the foundations of the earth, * and the heavens are the work of your hands;
26They shall perish, but you will endure; they all shall wear out like a garment; * as clothing you will change them, and they shall be changed;
27But you are always the same, * and your years will never end.
28The children of your servants shall continue, * and their offspring shall stand fast in your sight."

At the end of the Psalm is sung or said

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
  as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
    world without end.  Amen

The Lessons

The Old Testament Reading

Reader: A Reading (Lesson) from Genesis 32:22-33:17

Genesis 32:22-33:17
32:22 And he arose that night and took his two wives, his two female servants, and his eleven sons, and crossed over the ford of Jabbok. 23 He took them, sent them over the brook, and sent over what he had. 24 Then Jacob was left alone; and a Man wrestled with him until the breaking of day. 25 Now when He saw that He did not prevail against him, He touched the socket of his hip; and the socket of Jacob's hip was out of joint as He wrestled with him. 26 And He said, "Let Me go, for the day breaks." But he said, "I will not let You go unless You bless me!" 27 So He said to him, "What is your name?" He said, "Jacob." 28 And He said, "Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed." 29 Then Jacob asked, saying, "Tell me Your name, I pray." And He said, "Why is it that you ask about My name?" And He blessed him there. 30 So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: "For I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved." 31 Just as he crossed over Penuel the sun rose on him, and he limped on his hip. 32 Therefore to this day the children of Israel do not eat the muscle that shrank, which is on the hip socket, because He touched the socket of Jacob's hip in the muscle that shrank.33:1 Now Jacob lifted his eyes and looked, and there, Esau was coming, and with him were four hundred men. So he divided the children among Leah, Rachel, and the two maidservants. 2 And he put the maidservants and their children in front, Leah and her children behind, and Rachel and Joseph last. 3 Then he crossed over before them and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother. 4 But Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept. 5 And he lifted his eyes and saw the women and children, and said, "Who are these with you?" So he said, "The children whom God has graciously given your servant." 6 Then the maidservants came near, they and their children, and bowed down. 7 And Leah also came near with her children, and they bowed down. Afterward Joseph and Rachel came near, and they bowed down. 8 Then Esau said, "What do you mean by all this company which I met?" And he said, "These are to find favor in the sight of my lord." 9 But Esau said, "I have enough, my brother; keep what you have for yourself." 10 And Jacob said, "No, please, if I have now found favor in your sight, then receive my present from my hand, inasmuch as I have seen your face as though I had seen the face of God, and you were pleased with me. 11 Please, take my blessing that is brought to you, because God has dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough." So he urged him, and he took it. 12 Then Esau said, "Let us take our journey; let us go, and I will go before you." 13 But Jacob said to him, "My lord knows that the children are weak, and the flocks and herds which are nursing are with me. And if the men should drive them hard one day, all the flock will die. 14 Please let my lord go on ahead before his servant. I will lead on slowly at a pace which the livestock that go before me, and the children, are able to endure, until I come to my lord in Seir." 15 And Esau said, "Now let me leave with you some of the people who are with me." But he said, "What need is there? Let me find favor in the sight of my lord." 16 So Esau returned that day on his way to Seir. 17 And Jacob journeyed to Succoth, built himself a house, and made booths for his livestock. Therefore the name of the place is called Succoth. -- NKJV

10 The Second Song of Isaiah Quaerite Dominum
Isaiah 55:6-11

Seek the Lord while he wills to be found; *
 call upon him when he draws near.

Let the wicked forsake their ways *
 and the evil ones their thoughts;

And let them turn to the Lord, and he will have compassion, *
 and to our God, for he will richly pardon.

For my thoughts are not your thoughts,*
 nor your ways my ways, says the Lord.

For as the heavens are higher than the earth,*
 so are my ways higher than your ways,
 and my thoughts than your thoughts.

For as rain and snow fall from the heavens *
 and return not again, but water the earth,

Bringing forth life and giving growth, *
 seed for sowing and bread for eating,

So is my word that goes forth from my mouth; *
 it will not return to me empty;

But it will accomplish that which I have purposed, *
 and prosper in that for which I sent it.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *
 as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 	world without end.  Amen.

The New Testament Reading

Reader: A Reading (Lesson) from 1John 3:1-10

1 John 3:1-10
1Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. 2Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. 3And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure. 4Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness. 5And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin. 6Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him. 7Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous. 8He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. 9Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God. 10In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother. -- NKJV

18 A Song to the Lamb Dignus es
Revelation 4:11, 5:9-10, 13

Splendor and honor and kingly power *
 are yours by right, O Lord our God,

For you created everything that is, *
 and by your will they were created and have their being;

And yours by right, O Lamb that was slain, *
 for with your blood you have redeemed for God,

From every family, language, people, and nation, *
 a kingdom of priests to serve our God.

And so, to him who sits upon the throne, *
 and to Christ the Lamb,

Be worship and praise, dominion and splendor, *
 for ever and for evermore.

The Apostles' Creed
Officiant and People together, all standing

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
  maker of heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord;
  who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
  born of the Virgin Mary,
  suffered under Pontius Pilate,
  was crucified, dead, and buried.
  He descended into hell.
  The third day he rose again from the dead.
  He ascended into heaven,
  and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty.
  From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost,
  the holy catholic Church,
  the communion of saints,
  the forgiveness of sins,
  the resurrection of the body,
  and the life everlasting.  Amen.

The Officiant then says the following Collects

The Collect of the Day:

Sixth Sunday after the Epiphany
O God, the strength of all who put their trust in thee: Mercifully accept our prayers; and because through the weakness of our mortal nature, we can do no good thing without thee, give us the help of thy grace, that in keeping thy commandments we may please thee both in will and deed; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

A Collect for Fridays
Almighty God, whose most dear Son went not up to joy but first he suffered pain, and entered not into glory before he was crucified: Mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the cross, may find it none other than the way of life and peace; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. Amen.

Then, unless the Eucharist or a form of general intercession is to follow, the following prayer for mission is added.

Prayer for Mission
Almighty and everlasting God, by whose Spirit the whole body of thy faithful people is governed and sanctified: Receive our supplications and prayers which we offer before thee for all members of thy holy Church, that in their vocation and ministry they may truly and godly serve thee; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Here may be sung a hymn or anthem.

Authorized intercessions and thanksgivings may follow.

Before the close of the Office one or both of the following may be used

The General Thanksgiving
Officiant and People

Almighty God, Father of all mercies,
we thine unworthy servants
do give thee most humble and hearty thanks
for all thy goodness and loving-kindness
to us and to all men.
We bless thee for our creation, preservation,
and all the blessings of this life;
but above all for thine inestimable love
in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ;
for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory.
And, we beseech thee,
give us that due sense of all thy mercies,
that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful;
and that we show forth thy praise,
not only with our lips, but in our lives,
by giving up our selves to thy service,
and by walking before thee
in holiness and righteousness all our days;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
to whom, with thee and the Holy Spirit,
be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen.

A Prayer of St. Chrysostom
Officiant

Almighty God, who hast given us grace at this time with one
accord to make our common supplication unto thee; and
hast promised through thy well-beloved Son that when two
or three are gathered together in his Name thou wilt be in the
midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, the desires and petitions
of thy servants as may be best for us; granting us in this
world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life
everlasting.  Amen.

Then may be said
Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Officiant concludes with:

May the God of hope fill us with all joy and peace in believing through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Romans 15:13
