Daily Morning Prayer: Rite One

Officiant begins with the following:

Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. Phillipians 1:2

Confession of Sin

Dearly beloved, we have come together in the presence of Almighty God our heavenly Father, to render thanks for the great benefits that we have received at his hands, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear His holy Word, and to ask, for ourselves and on behalf of others, those things that are necessary for our life and our salvation. And so that we may prepare ourselves in heart and mind to worship him, let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, that we may obtain forgiveness by his infinite goodness and mercy.

or this

Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God.

Silence may be kept.
Officiant and People together, all kneeling

Almighty and most merciful Father,
we have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep,
we have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts,
we have offended against thy holy laws,
we have left undone those things which we ought to have done,
and we have done those things which we ought not to have done.
But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us,
spare thou those who confess their faults,
restore thou those who are penitent,
according to thy promises declared unto mankind
in Christ Jesus our Lord;
and grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake,
that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life,
to the glory of thy holy Name. Amen.

The Priest alone stands and says*

The Almighty and merciful Lord grant you absolution and remission of all your sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of his Holy Spirit. Amen.

*A deacon or lay person using the preceding form remains kneeling, and substitutes "us" for "you" and "our" for "your."

The Invitatory and Psalter

All stand

Officiant O Lord, open thou our lips.
People And our mouth shall show forth thy praise.

Officiant and People
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Alleluia

Then follows one of the Invitatory Psalms, Venite or Jubilate.
One of the following Antiphons may be sung or said with the Invitatory Psalm

On other Sundays and weekdays
The mercy of the Lord is everlasting: O come, let us adore him.

The Alleluias in the following Antiphons are used only in Easter Season.

On Feasts of the Incarnation
[Alleluia.] The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us: O come, let us adore him. [Alleluia.]

On all Saints and other Major Saints' Days
[Alleluia.] The Lord is glorious in his saints: O come, let us adore him. [Alleluia.]

Venite
Psalm 95:1-7

O come, let us sing unto the Lord; *
let us heartily rejoice in the strength of our salvation.
Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving *
and show ourselves glad in him with psalms.

[Antiphon, if used]

For the Lord is a great God, *
and a great King above all gods.
In his hand are the corners of the earth, *
and the strength of the hills is his also.
The sea is his, and he made it, *
and his hands prepared the dry land.

[Antiphon, if used]

O come, let us worship and fall down, *
and kneel before the Lord our Maker.
For he is the Lord our God, *
and we are the people of his pasture
and the sheep of his hand.

[Antiphon, if used]

O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; *
let the whole earth stand in awe of him.
For he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth
and with righteousness to judge the world
and the peoples with his truth.

Then follows

The Psalm or Psalms Appointed:

Psalm 40

Expectans, expectavi
1I waited patiently upon the LORD; * he stooped to me and heard my cry.
2He lifted me out of the desolate pit, out of the mire and clay; * he set my feet upon a high cliff and made my footing sure.
3He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; * many shall see, and stand in awe, and put their trust in the LORD.
4Happy are they who trust in the LORD! * they do not resort to evil spirits or turn to false gods.
5Great things are they that you have done, O LORD my God! how great your wonders and your plans for us! * there is none who can be compared with you.
6Oh, that I could make them known and tell them! * but they are more than I can count.
7In sacrifice and offering you take no pleasure * (you have given me ears to hear you);
8Burnt-offering and sin-offering you have not required, * and so I said, "Behold, I come.
9In the roll of the book it is written concerning me: * 'I love to do your will, O my God; your law is deep in my heart.'"
10I proclaimed righteousness in the great congregation; * behold, I did not restrain my lips; and that, O LORD, you know.
11Your righteousness have I not hidden in my heart; I have spoken of your faithfulness and your deliverance; * I have not concealed your love and faithfulness from the great congregation.
12You are the LORD; do not withhold your compassion from me; * let your love and your faithfulness keep me safe for ever,
13For innumerable troubles have crowded upon me; my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see; * they are more in number than the hairs of my head, and my heart fails me.
14Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me; * O LORD, make haste to help me.
15Let them be ashamed and altogether dismayed who seek after my life to destroy it; * let them draw back and be disgraced who take pleasure in my misfortune.
16Let those who say "Aha!" and gloat over me be confounded, * because they are ashamed.
17Let all who seek you rejoice in you and be glad; * let those who love your salvation continually say, "Great is the LORD!"
18Though I am poor and afflicted, * the Lord will have regard for me.
19You are my helper and my deliverer; * do not tarry, O my God.

Psalm 54

Deus, in nomine
1Save me, O God, by your Name; * in your might, defend my cause.
2Hear my prayer, O God; * give ear to the words of my mouth.
3For the arrogant have risen up against me, and the ruthless have sought my life, * those who have no regard for God.
4Behold, God is my helper; * it is the Lord who sustains my life.
5Render evil to those who spy on me; * in your faithfulness, destroy them.
6I will offer you a freewill sacrifice * and praise your Name, O LORD, for it is good.
7For you have rescued me from every trouble, * and my eye has seen the ruin of my foes.

At the end of the Psalm is sung or said

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
    world without end. Amen

The Lessons

The Old Testament Reading

Reader: A Reading (Lesson) from Ecclesiasticus 34:1-8,18-22

Ecclesiasticus 34:1-8,18-22
1 A man of no understanding has vain and false hopes, and dreams give wings to fools. 2 As one who catches at a shadow and pursues the wind, so is he who gives heed to dreams. 3 The vision of dreams is this against that, the likeness of a face confronting a face. 4 From an unclean thing what will be made clean? And from something false what will be true? 5 Divinations and omens and dreams are folly, and like a woman in travail the mind has fancies. 6 Unless they are sent from the Most High as a visitation, do not give your mind to them. 7 For dreams have deceived many, and those who put their hope in them have failed. 8 Without such deceptions the law will be fulfilled, and wisdom is made perfect in truthful lips. 18 If one sacrifices from what has been wrongfully obtained, the offering is blemished; the gifts of the lawless are not acceptable. 19 The Most High is not pleased with the offerings of the ungodly; and he is not propitiated for sins by a multitude of sacrifices. 20 Like one who kills a son before his father's eyes is the man who offers a sacrifice from the property of the poor. 21 The bread of the needy is the life of the poor; whoever deprives them of it is a man of blood. 22 To take away a neighbor's living is to murder him; to deprive an employee of his wages is to shed blood. -- RSV

10 The Second Song of Isaiah Quaerite Dominum
Isaiah 55:6-11

Seek the Lord while he wills to be found; *
call upon him when he draws near.

Let the wicked forsake their ways *
 and the evil ones their thoughts;

And let them turn to the Lord, and he will have compassion, *
and to our God, for he will richly pardon.

For my thoughts are not your thoughts,*
nor your ways my ways, says the Lord.

For as the heavens are higher than the earth,*
so are my ways higher than your ways,
and my thoughts than your thoughts.

For as rain and snow fall from the heavens *
and return not again, but water the earth,

Bringing forth life and giving growth, *
seed for sowing and bread for eating,

So is my word that goes forth from my mouth; *
 it will not return to me empty;

But it will accomplish that which I have purposed, *
and prosper in that for which I sent it.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 	world without end. Amen.

The New Testament Reading

Reader: A Reading (Lesson) from Revelation 13:1-10

Revelation 13:1-10
1Then I stood on the sand of the sea. And I saw a beast rising up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and on his horns ten crowns, and on his heads a blasphemous name. 2Now the beast which I saw was like a leopard, his feet were like the feet of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion. The dragon gave him his power, his throne, and great authority. 3And I saw one of his heads as if it had been mortally wounded, and his deadly wound was healed. And all the world marveled and followed the beast. 4So they worshiped the dragon who gave authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, "Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war with him?" 5And he was given a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies, and he was given authority to continue for forty-two months. 6Then he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme His name, His tabernacle, and those who dwell in heaven. 7It was granted to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them. And authority was given him over every tribe, tongue, and nation. 8All who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. 9If anyone has an ear, let him hear. 10He who leads into captivity shall go into captivity; he who kills with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints. -- NKJV

18 A Song to the Lamb Dignus es
Revelation 4:11, 5:9-10, 13

Splendor and honor and kingly power *
are yours by right, O Lord our God,

For you created everything that is, *
 and by your will they were created and have their being;

And yours by right, O Lamb that was slain, *
for with your blood you have redeemed for God,

From every family, language, people, and nation, *
a kingdom of priests to serve our God.

And so, to him who sits upon the throne, *
 and to Christ the Lamb,

Be worship and praise, dominion and splendor, *
 for ever and for evermore.

The Apostles' Creed
Officiant and People together, all standing

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
  maker of heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord;
who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
  born of the Virgin Mary,
  suffered under Pontius Pilate,
  was crucified, dead, and buried.
  He descended into hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
  He ascended into heaven,
and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost,
  the holy catholic Church,
  the communion of saints,
  the forgiveness of sins,
  the resurrection of the body,
  and the life everlasting. Amen.

Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
  as we forgive those
  who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,
  but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
  for ever and ever. Amen.

The Officiant then says the following Collects

The Collect of the Day:

Proper 25
Almighty and everlasting God, give unto us the increase of faith, hope, and charity; and, that we may obtain that which thou dost promise, make us to love that which thou dost command; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

A Collect for Fridays
Almighty God, whose most dear Son went not up to joy but first he suffered pain, and entered not into glory before he was crucified: Mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the cross, may find it none other than the way of life and peace; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. Amen.

Then, unless the Eucharist or a form of general intercession is to follow, the following prayer for mission is added.

Prayer for Mission
Lord Jesus Christ, who didst stretch out thine arms of love on the hard wood of the cross that everyone might come within the reach of thy saving embrace: So clothe us in thy Spirit that we, reaching forth our hands in love, may bring those who do not know thee to the knowledge and love of you; for the honor of thy Name. Amen.

Here may be sung a hymn or anthem.

Authorized intercessions and thanksgivings may follow.

Before the close of the Office one or both of the following may be used

The General Thanksgiving
Officiant and People

Almighty God, Father of all mercies,
we thine unworthy servants
do give thee most humble and hearty thanks
for all thy goodness and loving-kindness
to us and to all men.
We bless thee for our creation, preservation,
and all the blessings of this life;
but above all for thine inestimable love
in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ;
for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory.
And, we beseech thee,
give us that due sense of all thy mercies,
that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful;
and that we show forth thy praise,
not only with our lips, but in our lives,
by giving up our selves to thy service,
and by walking before thee
in holiness and righteousness all our days;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
to whom, with thee and the Holy Spirit,
be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen.

A Prayer of St. Chrysostom
Officiant

Almighty God, who hast given us grace at this time with one
accord to make our common supplication unto thee; and
hast promised through thy well-beloved Son that when two
or three are gathered together in his Name thou wilt be in the
midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, the desires and petitions
of thy servants as may be best for us; granting us in this
world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life
everlasting. Amen.

Then may be said
Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Officiant concludes with:

Glory to God whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine: Glory to him from generation to generation in the Church, and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever. Amen.
Ephesians 3:20,21
