Daily Evening Prayer: Rite Two
Officiant begins with the following:
Jesus said, 'I am the light of the world; whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.' John 8:12
Grace to you, and peace, from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:2
Confession of Sin
Officiant says to the people:
Dear friends in Christ, here in the presence of Almighty God,
let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts
confess our sins, so that we may obtain forgiveness by his
infinite goodness and mercy.
Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.
Silence may be kept.
Officiant and People together, all kneeling
Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us;
that we may delight in your will,
and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your Name. Amen.
Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.
*A deacon or lay person using the preceding form remains kneeling, and substitutes "us" for "you" and "our" for "your."

O Gracious Light Phos hilaron
O gracious Light, pure brightness of the everliving Father in heaven, O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed! Now as we come to the setting of the sun, and our eyes behold the vesper light, we sing your praises, O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. You are worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices, O Son of God, O Giver of life, and to be glorified through all the worlds.then follows
The Psalm or Psalms Appointed:
Psalm 36
Dixit injustus
1There is a voice of rebellion deep in the heart of the wicked; * there is no fear of God before his eyes.
2He flatters himself in his own eyes * that his hateful sin will not be found out.
3The words of his mouth are wicked and deceitful; * he has left off acting wisely and doing good.
4He thinks up wickedness upon his bed and has set himself in no good way; * he does not abhor that which is evil.
5Your love, O LORD, reaches to the heavens, * and your faithfulness to the clouds.
6Your righteousness is like the strong mountains, your justice like the great deep; * you save both man and beast, O LORD.
7How priceless is your love, O God! * your people take refuge under the shadow of your wings.
8They feast upon the abundance of your house; * you give them drink from the river of your delights.
9For with you is the well of life, * and in your light we see light.
10Continue your loving-kindness to those who know you, * and your favor to those who are true of heart.
11Let not the foot of the proud come near me, * nor the hand of the wicked push me aside.
12See how they are fallen, those who work wickedness! * they are cast down and shall not be able to rise.
Psalm 39
Dixi, Custodiam
1I said, "I will keep watch upon my ways, * so that I do not offend with my tongue.
2I will put a muzzle on my mouth * while the wicked are in my presence."
3So I held my tongue and said nothing; * I refrained from rash words; but my pain became unbearable.
4My heart was hot within me; while I pondered, the fire burst into flame; * I spoke out with my tongue:
5LORD, let me know my end and the number of my days, * so that I may know how short my life is.
6You have given me a mere handful of days, and my lifetime is as nothing in your sight; * truly, even those who stand erect are but a puff of wind.
7We walk about like a shadow, and in vain we are in turmoil; * we heap up riches and cannot tell who will gather them.
8And now, what is my hope? * O Lord, my hope is in you.
9Deliver me from all my transgressions * and do not make me the taunt of the fool.
10I fell silent and did not open my mouth, * for surely it was you that did it.
11Take your affliction from me; * I am worn down by the blows of your hand.
12With rebukes for sin you punish us; like a moth you eat away all that is dear to us; * truly, everyone is but a puff of wind.
13Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear to my cry; * hold not your peace at my tears.
14For I am but a sojourner with you, * a wayfarer, as all my forebears were.
15Turn your gaze from me, that I may be glad again, * before I go my way and am no more.
At the end of the Psalm is sung or said
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen-or-
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:* as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
The Gospel
Reader: A reading from the Gospel, according to St. .
Matthew 25:14-30
14"For the kingdom of heaven is like a man traveling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them.
15And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability; and immediately he went on a journey.
16Then he who had received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents.
17And likewise he who had received two gained two more also.
18But he who had received one went and dug in the ground, and hid his lord's money.
19After a long time the lord of those servants came and settled accounts with them.
20"So he who had received five talents came and brought five other talents, saying, 'Lord, you delivered to me five talents; look, I have gained five more talents besides them.'
21His lord said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.'
22He also who had received two talents came and said, 'Lord, you delivered to me two talents; look, I have gained two more talents besides them.'
23His lord said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.'
24"Then he who had received the one talent came and said, 'Lord, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered seed.
25And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the ground. Look, there you have what is yours.'
26"But his lord answered and said to him, 'You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed.
27So you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest.
28So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents.
29'For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away.
30And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'

The Song of Mary Magnificat
Luke 1:46-55
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior; * for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed: * the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name. He has mercy on those who fear him * in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm, * he has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, * and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, * and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel, * for he has remembered his promise of mercy, The promise he made to our fathers, * to Abraham and his children for ever. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
-OR-
The Song of Simeon Nunc dimittis
Luke 2:29-32
Lord, you now have set your servant free * to go in peace as you have promised; For these eyes of mine have seen the Savior, * whom you have prepared for all the world to see: A Light to enlighten the nations, * and the glory of your people Israel. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
The Apostles' Creed
Officiant and People together, all standing
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. |

The General Thanksgiving
Officiant and People
Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen.
A Prayer of St. Chrysostom
Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen.
Then may be said
Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Officiant concludes with:
May the God of hope fill us with all joy and peace in believing through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
